NASA's Perseverance rover finds organic building blocks of life in a Mars rock

NASA's Perseverance rover, using its SHERLOC instrument, detected organic molecules, a form of carbon that is a building block of life, in the "Bright Angel" rock formation in Mars's Jezero crater. Scientists are careful to stress this is not evidence of life itself: the carbon can arise from either biological or non-biological processes, and confirming which would require lab analysis back on Earth. It is the building blocks that have been found, not life.

"Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

Genesis 2:7 (NIV)
The Connection

Science keeps finding the ingredients of life scattered through the cosmos, the same carbon that makes up rocks, meteorites, and us, now turning up in the red dust of Mars. Scripture is unbothered by that chemistry. It never claimed we were made of anything rare or exotic; it says plainly that we are dust. What Genesis insists on is the second half of the verse. Dust does not become a living soul by chemistry alone, but by the breath of God. The marvel was never the ingredients. It is the breath.

A Prayer

Father, You formed us from the dust and breathed Your own life into us. When we marvel at the building blocks scattered across the heavens, let us marvel more at the breath that made us living souls. Thank You that we are not an accident of chemistry, but Your handiwork. Amen.
